Rio Piedras, Puerto Rico

Small back story, we met the owner at this store up the street from here called One Two for you. She usually tells us where to go for this and that. And we asked her the other day where a good fabric store is. She told us of a wonderland of stores that (as she portrayed it) only exist in love storys i.e low prices, everything you need.

So we took the bus down to Rio Piedras this afternoon. After wandering around the little city for a while we finally found the area she was talking about. It was everything she had said, complete with an indoor farmers market and all the local foods you could eat. 8x cheaper than Ocean Park too (the city we live in).

At first I thought we were going in circles. Saying “there is that Foot Locker again, and didn’t we just go by that Payless Shoe store?”  I finally figured out that we had walked past about 4 Payless stores and about 5 different Foot Lockers. I don’t know why they need them on every block, I guess the Puerto Ricans love their shoes.

Hannah picked up some sweet 80’s fabric for a buck a yard. For that price it probably was from the 80’s. I mean it was probably sitting at the store since 1984.

The architecture in many of the smaller city’s is amazing. Since mostly all building here are made from cement, it looks like instead of tearing the building down they just gut the buildings when they buy them and redo the whole thing. Buildings last way longer too, you don’t have to worry about termites, fires, or hurricanes. However, there are a lot of abandon buildings due to the high cost of tearing them down.

When we were getting back on the bus this guy looked over at me and asked if I had any other change.

Guy- “You have any extra change? (in Spanish)”
Me- “Oh, yeah! hold on”
Me- (Hold out my hand with 80 cents)” I only have 10 extra cents you can have that”

You need 75 cents to ride the bus.

Guy - (Grabs one of the quarters in my hand ,then proceeds to get on the bus)
Me - “Hey wait a sec! I needed that to ride on the bus!”
Guy - (Smiles then gets on the bus)

I threw in only 60 cents and luckily the bus driver was not paying attention. That or else it is not a big deal here if you don’t have enough money to ride the bus. I did notice that the guy who stole the quarter (right out of my hand) only had one other quarter. Which means he only threw in 50 cents.

A wonderland of shopping - awesome! I’ve always dreamed of such a place - where I could get 4 pairs of payless shoes all from different stores within walking distance!
